Josh makes a bold decision;
Phillip can't believe what he sees.

Thornbirds Posted: Sep 15 2009, 09:57 AM

I just don't know what to say.

They're killing me here.

Such a great day. Get ready for tears.

Phillip and Beth fans should be happy.

Sarah meets the Spauldings.

Alan Spaulding is finally recognized as a Hero in Springfield.

Alan and Buzz have a great scene.

Josh tells Reva he's leaving.

But the ending....

I am floored. if I should say what it is...let me know. But I want people to be as surprised as I was. All is can say is...ONCE AGAIN...A grown man is crying in his office at 11 AM...sooooo NOT cool.

P.S. Minnie, sweetie....THIS is YOUR day!!!!!!!!!

One BIG GMLP to your Thorny. It's so nice of you to
take the time to recap from your office.

I'm really very upset and sad Josh it leaving.

Everything I have been feeling about losing the show just came pouring out at the ending of today's show. Heaving sobs, scared my kid, everything. I am heartbroken. All of it was great, even the sad part, just great writing. I loved it, but I am really heavy hearted now. Wow.

Thornbirds Posted: Sep 15 2009, 10:20 AM

Oh, yeah..I am a Y&R fan...but, um....really what was the point of having Jeanne Cooper and Christian LeBlanc there today? As different (random?) characters, none the less. Did CBS/P&G PAY them for a pointless cameo...when..say...ED should have been there to have words with Lillian, for example.

Sorry.

I agree Thorny, it was a waste having Jeanne and Christian guest spot.

stephw27 Posted: Sep 15 2009, 10:38 AM

Thorny.... thank you so much! I am so looking forward to today's show! Shawnee...wow, that was some reaction! Better have the Kleenex ready today, sounds like a real tearjerker!!

Thanks so much Thorny.

I was really upset that I read that spoiler yesterday.
It was leaked out on another board.

It will be late tonight before I can watch it.

I do believe that Jeanne C and Michael L. just did this with no pay . From what I read they just wanted to pay respect to GL. And I didn't even noticed them the first time I watched.

stephw27 Posted: Sep 15 2009, 10:44 AM

Haven't seen the spoiler for today's show yet. Could be a good thing. I want to be surprised when I watch today!!

Shawnee Posted: Sep 15 2009, 10:45 AM

I have avoided spoilers like the plague! I found out about Buzz and Lillian from TS of all people! I have hidden Facebook feeds and Tweets from anything GL related. If I had known about today, I don't think it would have hit as hard but even if the show wasn't ending, that was rough.

Steph, my reaction was a little over the top, but I have had a lot of loss this year, it's really mostly me. It will get you, but don't worry too much!

I thought it was nice of JC and CL to want to pay respect, especially JC who is a soap dinosaur (in a good way). But I agree, precious moments could have been spent on pertinent characters. Nice of Josh to mention Marah by he way, geez!

Thanks Thorny. I'm looking forward to and dreading going home to watch it later. I swear Ron deserves an Emmy this year. He has really done a great job, especially these last several weeks. If there is any justice he'll finally get one. I pretty much figured by what was said at the camping trip how this was going to end, but it's still heartbreaking nonetheless.

Still sad with goose bumps..as I just thought of the scene Reva shared today with Alan....just makes ya think! She actually kissed him (goodbye?!) It was fitting...and I loved Alan's apology to little Sarah, too.

thorny, thinking back there have been so many little goodbyes, I just didn't see them. Today when Buzz said "you did it" and he said "yeah, I did it". That was foreshadowing for sure. I am anxious about how the next three days are going to go, I don't want it to end on such a sad note.

All in all, this has been a really beautiful story of redemption.

I was happy to see that Philip and Beth getting engage and then him going to his father. Then when he touch Alan shoulder and then when he said daddy you could feel his panic in his voice and then realizing that Alan was gone and he broke down, brake my heart. I'm going to miss this show so much. That scene was so powerful. I love everything about today episode. It just sad that it all coming to an end.

stephw27 Posted: Sep 15 2009, 03:27 PM

It was nice to see the Phillip and Beth engagement! When Phillip walked up to Alan, I thought he was reflecting on things and then when he didn't move or respond, I started to cry. So sad!!

I'm glad they got a nice little scene together. They've been through so much together over the years. I always liked that no matter how much they hated each other there was still a fondness there for each other, too.

I'm glad these last few weeks we got to see the loving Alan that I always knew was there under the surface. The one that was so afraid to give his whole heart, after having it broken so many times, even if it was broken by himself. A big kudos to Ron Raines who always let that Alan shine subtley shine through even when he was having some of his not so shining moments.

I thought the scene with Grant at the was really well done. Grant did a fantastic job in it. Part of me, I must confess, was glad Alan wasn't alive to hear Phillip say he wanted Beth, given how much Alan loved her himself. I bawled my eyes out at the end, I must say. Alan has been my favorite character on the show since he came on in 1977. That was a hard goodbye, but I'm glad it was peaceful, dignified and classy.

I was sad, too, that Alan didn't get any alone scenes with Beth or Peyton these last several episodes. But I was glad he did get to see Sarah, at least.

Minnie, I just couldn't imagine how Alan would have reacted to the news that Phillip proposed to Beth.

Photobucket

--------------------
MinnieBannister Posted: Sep 15 2009, 03:54 PM

I thought that was a little insensitive of Phillip, actually. But the "new" Alan probably would have been ok with it because he wanted to see his son happy.

--------------------
stephw27 Posted: Sep 15 2009, 04:00 PM

I guess that Alan's talk with Phillip really got to Phillip with him proposing to Beth and all. He was pretty excited. I think Alan probably would have been okay with it, but, still would have to be hard for him nonetheless!

Still in shock about Alan!

Tomorrow going to be hard, everyone learning about Alan death. Lizzie was right when she was talking Bill about the other shoe droping.

This whole show was so good and so very sad. Even the happy stuff was sad and you could hear it in the actors voices. I was tearing up through the whole thing and sobbing like a fool at the end. I loved Alan. While going out finally happy and redeamed was classy, it was sad because I've watched him since he came on and he was so very rarely happy in his life. Everyone knocked it out of the park, but my god, RR and GA tore my heart out

Can you imagine how difficult it had to be for RR to sit there "dead" while Grant sobbed in his lap? I bet there wasn't a dry eye around.

Oh, yeah. same here. Tore it out and stomped on it.

I know I can't imagine. Playing dead in a movie is hard enough (believe it or not I did it once) but to have that going on plus all the emotion of the show dying as well. Mercy sakes. God bless them both.

Some of the best goodbyes this week are the subtle ones--blown kisses, quick winks, and a few cracked voices.

But I couldn't let go of the two main themes/words throughout today's show. Alan repeated that "that's what parents do for their children" and Josh repeated that he was moving away for a long time.

Alan has always said that everything he does or has done is for his children and family. But his actions have generally done anything but draw his children closer to him. Today we saw what this parent did for his child. I think this was a very poignant ending for such an impressive character. I wonder how this may help James and Phillip get closer.

Josh, no longer feeling needed to help everyone in Springfield, slowly and surely says goodbye to family and friends. Reva choking up when he told her he was leaving was touching. I am taking it as a sign that Springfield will be needing some guidance in the future. With the moral compass gone, there will be plenty of trials and tribulations to sort out should the stories someday continue elsewhere. Kind of scary thinking Josh is the moral compass, isn't it?

WOW! That is one of the 1st shocking moments I have seen on a soap since the internet ruined the element of surprise years ago. Truly soapy moment!

One of the absolute best and most heartbreaking episodes .
I could hardly even watch a scene with Alan without choking up.
And when Phillip started around that bench that was it.
I can't believe they did this to Alan.
And GA broke my heart in a million pieces.

I loved the whole show but just don't have words right now. That last few seconds totally did me in.

an amazing, amazing show. And although I hate to see anyone die, really, I thought it was a fitting time for Alan to die. Everyone was proud of him; everyone was impressed by what he had done for his son (Daisy summed it up perfectly when talking to James, I thought); everyone felt he'd been a hero...but at the same time, everyone wondered if this time he really was going to change, and I know Alan knew that, because he's said it so many times in the past and then something happened and he reverted to type.
So for me, it was a fitting tribute to what he has always WANTED to be that he got to go out on this note, and always be remembered for this pure, unselfish, loving act. He gets to be the hero he always wished he could be, and got to die with the knowledge that he could finally be truly proud of himself, and with a heart full of love and hope - something that must have been a rare gift to him.

Anyway - that's how I got through it - because it truly was a heartbreaking episode, and today will be even more so I think.

I finally got to watch yesterday's show.

I am overwhelmed. Overwhelmed by this amazing show we all love and our beautiful actors who deliver time and time again. What a wonderful, heartbreaking show that combines all of the best and worst parts of life: the happiness of Buzz and Lillian, and Billy and Vanessa, with the death of Alan, who ended up, if not redeemed, then maybe understood.

I think RR and GA both did a tremendous job in their scenes. They both seemed overcome, for different reasons, Phillip with realizing what life really had to offer, and Alan actually humbly accepting gratitude and congratulations that he actually did right by his son. It was all so beautiful.

I know it's not over yet, and I won't be able to watch Friday's show live due to work, but I feel truly privileged to have been a fan for 20 years, to have seen some of the greatest moments on this show, to have cherished these characters and respected daytime drama as a medium for telling thoughtful and beautiful stories. I know you all share my sentiment, many having watched far more years than I have. But I am just truly overwhelmed by the beauty and heartbreak of yesterday's show.
