A Very Merry Christmas
Previously -- Josh tells Shayne he's not leaving town. Shayne explains things to his dad. Shayne, Josh and Reva are together, Josh hopes Shayne will be there tomorrow. Shayne asks Dinah to go back to Germany with him.
Dinah attempts to shoot a Find your Light for the television station.
She has a lot of trouble doing that. Ashley yells at her to make Dinah try to inspire people to bring light into their minds and their eyes. Christmas is more important than that.
Bill is leaving a message for Lizzie. He misses her. He doesn't tell her what's going on. He is drinking.
Reva kisses a photo of her and Jonathan.
Jeff asks how many people they are expecting. Not that many but Lewis men have enormous appetites.
She knows how sorry Jeffrey is that Ava can't be there. She is sorry Shayne has to leave tomorrow. You don't know how much you miss them until they come back. The baby knows how much he is loved, the whole family, the whole town will be looking out for him. He won't let her talk about being sick. He has a stocking made for the baby! Miracle written across the stocking.
At the farmhouse, Olivia and Emma are looking at the tree.
She likes the way it smells like "real" Christmas. Natalia comes in wearing bangs!
Olivia asks if a package arrived. Natalia doesn't think so. It was something special courier for Ava. Emma is pretty happy. They talk about the living arrangements. They both want it to be a great Christmas and after they will move back to the Beacon. Emma overhears. She is sad about it. Olivia and Natalia both seem to regret the choice too.
At the station they are on Take 15. By the time the scene ends, they are on Take 85.

Only Love Can Save the World, Only Love . . .

Dinah puts something in the trunk of her car when Shayne wheels up.
He can really get around! She talks about spending a few hours recording a message of hope, but her brother is going to trial for kidnapping and it is all her fault. Shayne has to go to his mom's for Christmas and he asks her to go with him. He says every time his mom thinks its going to be different. That's the definition of insanity isn't it? She's not keen on being around Jeffrey. Shayne says that Bill will be there. She doubts that. Then she agrees when he says, "Don't make me suffer through this alone."
Buzz is Santa at the convenience store and runs into Bill, who is still drinking.
Buzz says Merry Christmas and Bill says If you say so and Buzz says Nice attitude. Then Bill recognizes the man in the santa suit. They talk about the trial. Bill says life can't be so good if you are about to be taunted by Santa Claus. Buzz says he wasn't going to do that. He doesn't wish Bill or Lizzie any more misery. Bill says he loves Lizzie and Buzz says he knows Bill does. Buzz says, so that's Christmas, you and your six friends? Bill retorts that just having a beard and a red get up doesn't make him Santa. Buzz says he knows its just a day not unlike every other day. Stores close, wars stop. Buzz says if he were Bill he wouldn't keep the court room date with him today, or something like that.
Outside, Billy thanks Buzz for speaking to Bill. Buzz says his pleasure. Now Billy owes him.
Shayne calls to confirm his seat and is told he can't leave the country.
At the farmhouse, Olivia watches as Emma unwraps a large doll.
Olivia says she is beautiful like your sister Ava and now she can be with her whenever Emma needs her, isn't that great. Emma looks glum and says, its great. Olivia leaves to make a call to track down a present. She will be right back. As Olivia walks out of the room, Emma grabs her coat and leaves the farmhouse.
At the prison, Natalia asks the guard for a favour.
She wants to hug her son on Christmas. The guard nods OK and Natatlia and Rafe stand and hug each other, bringing tears to my eyes! She says Merry Christmas Rafael. And may we be together next year in our new home.
Shayne stops Jeffrey as he is carrying packages and says It was you, wasn't it? Flagged my passport so I can't leave the country.
Jeffrey admits it was him. Shayne says he had no right to do that. What are you doing? It was a big mistake. Shayne shouldn't be there; it will make things harder on his mother, on their relationship. Jeffrey doesn't think so. Shayne says Jeffrey didn't see her arguing with his father about Shayne, she almost knocked herself out arguing. Jeffrey wisely says, you know Reva and Josh are always going to find something to argue about (isn't that the truth!). She needs Shayne. She needs him because she is sick and scared and hasn't had her kids. Shayne being there gives her joy and hope.
He tosses an ornament to Shayne and says Reva told him it was Shaynes when he was a kid. Shayne says I don't need this. I don't need you laying this on me.
Its Christmas Shayne. Try a little peace on earth, just for today. Jeffrey leaves to get more supplies. Shayne turns his wheel chair and throws the ornament away from him.
Inside Cross Creek, Reva is really glad Josh could come.
She spoke to Maura earlier and she sounded really good. Josh asks how she is feeling. She says she is good, she just needed to rest, referring to the incident after she and Josh argued about Shayne. Josh appologizes for coming off that way. They don't want to fight with each other. They can't make him stay, but maybe they can make him want to stay. She says they can do that by making it the best Christmas ever. Josh agrees. They tell each other Merry Christmas. Josh reaches for the mistletoe and Reva slaps his hand, as Shayne peers through the half-opened door.
Dinah and Bill meet outside Cross Creek.
Bill says I didn't know you were going to be here and she says I was hoping you would show! Bill admits she was right about Alan. It doesn't make any since that Alan would be the kidnapper. Bill was just trying to jump on any explanation except the obvious one. Dinah doesn't want him to think that he could have done it. Then Billy walks up, happy to see Bill and Dinah. He gives Dinah a kiss on the cheek and shakes his son's hand then says, let's go inside and get ourselves something to eat.
Billy and Bill go inside while Dinah makes a funny face.
At the farmhouse, Natalia comes home to find Olivia frantically searching for Emma who has disappeared.
Olivia says, "She was here, she was acting, she was quiet and I don't know I didn't think anything of it." Natalia questions where Olivia was and Olivia says are you saying I'm a bad mother? You just got back from visiting your son in prison. Don't do that, Natalia says. Olivia says that Natalia made her look bad in front of Emma, the Christmas tree . . Natalia says she was just trying to give Emma a nice Christmas. Let's go look for her. Olivia asks her why she cares? Natalia says she would die for that kid. Olivia gets it. The phone rings and Frank asks if she is missing someone. Emma is at the station.
Billy is inside at Cross Creek telling them that this party needs a little pick me up.
He is talking about Harlan always reading the Christmas story, not partying harder. So he will do the honers this year. The other part of the tradition is that everyone puts one last ornament on the tree.
Billy starts reading as Josh hangs an ornament on the tree. As Billy reads, we see Shayne rolling down the road in his chair, looking distraught. He finds the ornament he tossed away earlier.
Billy continues reading and Reva hangs an ornament.
Billy reads as we see Ashley working at the station, see Dinah select an ornament from the box, see Santa Buzz and Frank at the station, see Olivia and Nalia hug, and see Jeffrey hang an ornament.
After he has finished reading, Reva looks in the ornament box and is sad to see that Shayn'e childhood ornament is missing, the one she gave to him that first Christmas when she came back from being dead that time.
Josh tells how Shayne kept it on his bedside table for the longest time. Reva is upset because she just saw it yesterday. Shayne wheels in while they are arguing with a smile on his face (for the first time since he returned to Springfield!).
Reva is glad to see him. He parks his chair in front of the tree and says give me a second here. Josh goes over to help him and Shayne says, I got it Dad. Everyone watches and Reva steadies him as he stands up to hang his ornament on the tree.
Reva cries with happiness to see that he still has the ornament. He hangs it high on the tree and then Reva hugs him before he sits back down. Even Bill is smiling while this goes on.
At the farmhouse, Natalia and Olivia watch as Emma opens another gift while "I'll be Home for Christmas" plays in the background. The gift is a lovely purse.
Natalia says, there is one more. Emma opens a book, A Child's Christmas in Wales.
Natalia hopes Emma likes it, it was her favorite when she was a kid, it is about a little girl with big dreams and a magic friend who makes them all come true. Emma says there is writing in it. Nat says she wrote in it for Emma, just like her daddy did for her. She asks Emma to read it. Emma reads, "To Emma, sometimes the bigger we get the smaller our dreams are. I hope your dreams keep getting bigger and bigger. Love always, Natalia." Olivia looks thoughtful as Emma reads and tells Emma they can put it on her bookshelf next to her bed. Emma questions, in the hotel? Olivia hedges and Emma says "I don't want to go back." She doesn't like it there. Olivia says they have good times there and Emma says No and shakes her head. Natalia says Emma is always welcome at the farm and hang out. Emma says it is not enough.
Emma runs out of the room. Natalia goes after her into the kitchen.
She asks Emma why she wanted to go see Rafe. Emma thought he would be lonely and he is family, isn't he? Just then Olivia comes in with a very long and narrow gift for Natalia. It is from her apartment in Chicago, where she marked off Rafe's height as he grew up. Emma stands in front of it and Olivia says she is almost as tall as Rafe was at her age. Natalia says Thank you.
Back at Cross Creek, Reva and Shayne sit together.
Shayne is staying and Reva wants to be sure it is for the right reasons. Josh brings over some glasses for a toast for Shayne. Hear ye hear ye, Shayne is home and home is a lot better for it. He calls Shayne his friend and his hero, which makes Shayne uncomfortable. Shayne thanks them then says he needs to get back to Remy's to crash. He will call tomorrow. Dinah leaves with him. After they leave, Josh asks Jeffrey if he did something to keep Shayne from leaving and Jeffrey admits he had his passport flagged. Josh thanks him. Jeff says that Shayne wants to be here but just needed an excuse. Reva says thanks and hugs Jeffrey.
Outside Dinah says to Shayne: You're not going back to Germany. He admits he isn't.
That is OK with her, she didn't really want to leave anyway. She wants Shayne's help with a Christmas gift for her brother (Shayne's first cousin). He says, you need my help buying your brother a Christmas gift. Dinah says this isn't the kind of gift you can buy. It's one that could get them in some trouble, lots of trouble. Lots of lots of trouble? he asks. She nods and Shayne says, lead the way.
Back at the mansion, Billy has a present for Bill.
Bill says that he didn't get his dad anything. Billy says its OK, sit down. As Bill sits down, Billy says "Oh, I hope you like it!" Bill finds his laptop in the box. You got me my laptop for Christmas. Billy picks it up and says to hold on a second. He opens it and presses a magic button and up pops a video screen with Lizzie on a webcam! She waves and says "Hi baby! Merry Christmas!" Bill is really touched!
Back at Cross Creek, Reva stops Josh with a question before he leaves, it is about who the god father of her baby should be. Josh thinks it should be the baby's older brother, Shayne! Jeffrey asks Josh to stay and have some drinks with them.
At the Farmhouse, Natalia has a gift for Olivia. Olivia questions whether it is a "regift" and Natalia says, well sort of. It is keys to the farmhouse.
She wants them to stay. They won't agree on some things. Olivia quetions, anything? Natalia says we can agree that we are all we've got. Emma deserves to grow up in a house like this and she wants to help mark off Emma's heights like she did for Rafe. Emma says, "Can we stay, Mommy? Can we?" Olivia smiles and says Yes, they will stay. Emma hugs them both. It is a perfect Christmas for Emma!
At the mansion, Lizzie asks if he is having a good Christmas and Bill says I am now that she popped up on his laptop.
She says Billy is pretty good. Bill says, Yeah he is. Billy hears that and leaves the room. There is something Bill needs to tell her, she says she knows about the trial. He says she doesn't need to worry about it. She isn't worried. She is going to be there, by his side and they will prove to everyone that he is innocent. He still doesn't tell her that he has doubts about himself because of his memory loss. He loves her. She loves him too, no matter what happens.
Outside by Dinah's car, Shayne asks if she is sure this is how she wants to roll on Christmas. She is sure. Too many people have suffered because of her. She is going to save her brother and wipe the slate clean. She attempts to set a piece of paper on fire. Shayne stops her. If we are going to do this we're going to do it right. He knows she brought him there for a reason. He gets a molotov cocktail out of his jacket and says Let's go.
At the station, Ashley is finishing up the edits on the Find Your Light peice that started the episode.
The tape rolls and Dinah narates as we see the live Dinah and Shayne throw the lighted cocktails at the warehouse where the evidence against Bill is being stored.
"This time of year seems like an especially good time to remember that simple message. . ."
The building starts to burn.
"A message of hope and brotherhood, and finding joy in the things that are really important."
Olivia, Emma and Natalia share cookies.
"When times are tough we have to stop and appreciate what we have, what sustains us, and what keeps us waking up in the morning, our families. Our lives may not be perfect . . ."
Bill and Lizzie touch their monitors.
"People make mistakes, but we survive."
Billy looks down at Bill from above.
"and we forgive. And although the future may seem uncertain, nothing is ever lost as long as we have faith."
Lizzie blows Bill a kiss.
"It's Christmas . . ."
The live Dinah throws a molotov cocktail at the building.
"Where the unexpected gift from the least expected person can turn everything around."
The building burns.
"Where there was once only darkness there may be light."
Reva, Jeffrey and Josh toast.
"And above all there is that one gift that cost nothing . . ."
Reva feels the baby kick and has Jeffrey and Josh feel her tummy.
"Requires no wrapping, and that's love. It comes in all shapes and sizes. Love, what would Christmas be without it? "
Then Dinah on tape asks, "OK, how did I do.?"

I really liked this show even more after writing about it. There was a symmetry that made it special, starting and ending with Dinah's taping of her Find Your Light spot.
ReplyDeleteI like the Natalia and Olivia stuff, and especially that sweet Emma! I think the characters are showing their awkward feelings, and it is interesting to me. They chose each other in the end to give Emma her little family, such as it is, and I liked that! I liked that Emma doesn't like living at the hotel and likes having her own room in a real house where a sweet friend/family member takes care of her (other than mommy, I mean). A larger family that poor Emma hasn't had. I give Olivia credit for not sending the little darling away to boarding school like all the other characters. And now she is giving her a real home, which Liv, god love her, doesn't know how to do without Natalia's help!
I liked the scenes where Shayne tossed the ornament, Reva was upset that it was gone, then Shayne found it and brought it back, standing up to hang it on the tree.
I also liked Billy reading the Christmas story while we got glimpses into the Christmases that others were having.
But my favorite was the final scene with Dinah narrating the Find Your Light segment for WSPR while we followed a few Springfield characters around town on Christmas Day. I thought that scene was brilliant!
