Losing Something You Love

Previously - Ashlee finding Coops manuscript. Jeffrey and Reva talking. Dinah being held hostage by Brody. Lillian telling Beth that Coop is not Phillip.

Opens at the farmhouse, Natalia is on the phone. Emma and Olivia are going over her schoolwork. Emma says she has to write a report for school on what makes her family unique. She's not sure what “unique" means. Olivia explains that it means one of a kind. Natalia tells Olivia about someone wanting to do a fundraiser at the hotel next week. Olivia says that is fine. Olivia tells Emma that she has an idea they can look over the family album to get an idea about the history. Emma says that she wants to do an interview like the newspapers do. Olivia says that is great what does Emma want to ask her. Emma says she doesn't want to interview her mother. She wants to interview Grandpa Alan on what makes their family unique. Olivia and Natalia look at each other.

Alan finds Beth in the study at the Spaulding Mansion. Alan says that Lizzie is upstairs. Beth says that her daughter is crushed. Alan knows and they should celebrate. Beth looks at Alan. Alan explains that Bill Lewis left. He's out of Lizzie's life for good. Now it can be the way it should be. Lizzie running Spaulding with Alan by her side. Beth as his wife with the children by his side. It can finally be normal again. Beth says of course. Alan questions if there is something wrong with the style of Beth's engagement ring. Beth says it's perfect. If it's perfect then why is Beth not wearing it right now? If she doesn't like the style, they can take it to the jeweler and she can have whatever she wants. Beth says the ring is beautiful. Alan questions why whenever he mentions marriage to Beth, she changes the subject. Beth looks at Alan.

Coop and Buzz are reading the final manuscript for Coop's book at Company. Coop says he's not going to publish it. It was a stupid idea. He can't even find an ending that works.

At Cross Creek, Jeffrey and Reva talk about doing a video for their son. Reva can show their son all the parent stuff. Jeffrey says he'd love that. He missed that with Ava. Jeffrey will even consider doing extra dirty diaper duty. Reva is impressed. Just then Josh shows up. Josh tells them that their front door was open. Jeffrey hopes that Josh is there to help take care of the decorations. Did Jeffrey just toss them in the trash? No, Jeffrey is all about decorations. He put them away. He needs Josh's help with the huge reindeer out front. Jeffrey questions about retiring it. Josh says they can't do that. Shayne loved it when he was little. He was all excited about how the nose went on and off. Josh can help Jeffrey take it down. Jeffrey says good because he and Reva have to head over to Cedars afterwards. There's nothing wrong with the baby right. No they are about to take a workshop on parenting. Reva says that she will have to meet Jeffrey at Cedars. She has some errands that she has to take care of. Can he make sure to take down the mistletoe? Reva looks at Josh. Reva and Jeffrey kiss. Reva leaves. Josh and Jeffrey laugh about having to break it to Rudolph that he is going into deep storage. Josh and Jeffrey leave. Reva sneaks back in and grabs the camcorder and some video tapes. She leaves.

At the Community center, the tension is thick as Byron holds a knife to Dinah's throat.

Shayne and Byron face off over Dinah. Shayne says this is not the way for Byron to do it. The kid hates his name. He'll make a big splash in the news if he kills Dinah. She's the head of a huge TV station. Byron's name will be all over the place. The press will be in his face all the time during the trial and afterwards. Dinah tells Shayne to stop antagonizing Byron. Shayne laughs saying that Byron is even looking for permission to do it. He can't do it himself. He's not going to go through it. He'll have to go through Shayne first. Shayne doesn't give a damn about his life. If Byron wants to see a lousy life, try living in Shayne's boots for a bit. Shayne saw some horrible things overseas that would make anyone cringe. It's was a nightmare. Guys used to fight just to get kicks. Shayne tells Byron to show him what he has. Where's the bravado now? Byron takes off showing that he's just a scared punk. Dinah looks at Shayne. She lectures him. Byron could have killed her and what was Shayne doing. Shayne says that Byron never knew what hit him. Shayne knew that it wasn't going to happen. Dinah sits and shakes her head looking at Shayne.

Jeffrey and Josh are at Cross Creek after taking care of Rudolph. Jeffrey suggests that Rudolph spend next Christmas at Josh's place. Josh says that he will be finding a place of his own soon. Jeffrey says that he has to tell something to Josh. Is it about the baby? No, not Jeffrey's son but rather Shayne. Jeffrey shows Josh the medal. Josh questions what that means. Jeffrey says he found it in the mud by the lake. So Shayne just pitched it into the water? Josh knows that Shayne hates being called a hero. He hates the praise when he feels like he failed. He can't do his work anymore. Jeffrey sort of stepped in and helped Shayne out. He got Shayne work as a counselor at the community center on 5th street. It will be a good thing for him. Josh agrees he just wished that Jeffrey had told him first. Jeffrey says he really likes this jacket. Just warn him first if Josh is going to punch him again. Josh says he's not going to do that. Josh tells Jeffrey thanks for helping Shayne. Jeffrey says that Josh needs to keep an eye on Shayne. Reva has more than enough on her plate right now. Josh agrees with that as well. Jeffrey questions what just happened they both just agreed on something. Josh says there must be a full moon tonight. Josh thanks Jeffrey and leaves.

Buzz attempts to read the manuscript at Company but Coop is stopping him. Buzz says it's a good story. Coop just wants to forget about it. Buzz says that if he wants to read another book what about the financials for Company instead. Coop agrees but he questions who attempted to do it first. Buzz says he did. Coop says that he needs to be on the payroll with sorting out the mess.

Beth comes down the stairs at the Mansion and says that Peyton is still fussy. Alan suggests that Peyton is fussy because Beth has not accepted Alan's marriage proposal. Alan questions if he needs violins or a place in the countryside to make it more romantic. He can make the calls for her. Beth says it's fine. She just needs time to process. Alan says she should have had plenty of time when she realized that Peyton was their daughter. He knows that she's been preoccupied with stuff. He gets that. Beth is nervous. Alan says that Law School is full time. It's a job and a half really. Beth questions if her phone rang. She's expecting a call from Mr. Brooks. Alan is impressed. A high powered attorney. What does he want with Beth? Beth is helping him work on a pro bono case. A tenant is being threatened with eviction. Beth is going to shadow Mr. Brooks for a bit. Alan questions why such a high powered attorney would do something pro bono. Maybe because the person needs help to save her home. The phone rings. Mr. Brooks wants to meet at Company. Beth squirms and suggests Towers instead. Mr. Brooks wants Company because he prefers the coffee there. Beth reluctantly agrees. Beth says she has to go. She's not avoiding Alan's marriage proposal. She has work. Beth leaves. Alan sits at his desk and gets a call from Emma. Emma wants to interview Grandpa Alan about family. Alan says that Emma has come to the right person because he knows all about the importance of family. Olivia and Natalia just shake their heads.

Reva is outside when she turns on the camcorder. She says that this is crazy that she has cancer while she is pregnant with him. She wants to tell him a bit about life. She's had quite a life according to people. She knows that if her son is watching this then she's passed away. Reva is so sorry for doing that to her son. She wanted to watch him grow up more than anything. Reva says that if she's gone she should fill her son on her life, where she's from and stuff like that.

At the farmhouse, Alan arrives to greet Emma as Olivia and Natalia watch. Alan thanks Natalia for taking his coat. Alan is so happy that Emma asked him to talk about family. Alan is the one person that can tell her all about that and what makes them unique. Olivia and Natalia roll their eyes.

Beth arrives outside Company. She hopes and prays that Coop is not inside. Coop then comes out and sees Beth. He can tell that she was hoping he would not be there. She's sorry that they ended it that way. Coop says they ended it because Beth is marrying a man that doesn't understand her like he does. It's a simple choice in Coop's book. Just then Mr. Brooks shows up. He tells Beth to head inside since time is money. He has a court case at 5pm. Beth heads inside with him. Coop follows soon afterwards.

Outside Reva tells her son she has a lot of wisdom to impart from her long life. Well, everyone says that she has had a long life. She didn't expect to be a mommy again so late in her life. She says that her son is a miracle. Pretty much everyone in the medical community is saying that to her. Reva says that love has the power to do a lot of things. It can heal people, make them better, change people like his older brother Jonathon and his daddy Jeffrey. Jeffrey is so crazy about having his son. He thinks he's not really cut out do this daddy business. Honestly, it probably scares the heck out of him. Reva says that is a secret between her and her son for now. Reva asks a favour from her son. Cut Jeffrey some slack because he will screw up. He will make mistakes. She understands that her son will want to yell and Jeffrey but he has to understand what it's like for his father. Jeffrey will be all alone raising a kid. It's not an easy thing. Reva starts crying. She didn't want to be so mushy. She'll get back to him. She promises. Just then Jeffrey shows up and surprises his wife. Reva looks up at him. Jeffrey says they have to go to this parenting course. He wants to learn as much as he can. Can they really teach parenting in a 2 hour course? Reva laughs. Jeffrey helps his wife stand up and they head off.

Dinah is still lecturing Shayne at the Community center. What the heck was he doing back there? Shayne didn't ask Dinah to come to the community center to see him. She says he's a thrill seeker. Just like her with the fires right? Dinah thought that they got each other. Can't he take anything serious? Shayne can. He's doing that right now. Dinah looks at Shayne and leaves.

Shayne arrives back at his apartment and finds Josh there.

Josh says that he has some stuff for the new place. Can Shayne let him in? Sure. Shayne enters first and then Josh follows. Josh says he can get Shayne a bigger place. Shayne says he has everything that he needs right there. Josh doesn't have to do this for him. Josh says he's a dad. It kind of comes with the territory. It's therapy helping someone else. Just let him. Josh says he has a heater first. So Shayne can be more warm and fuzzy? No because Remy says that the heating sometimes goes on the fritz. Shayne tells Josh that it's not his fault that Shayne is in the chair. Shayne's where he is because of himself. Shayne says he's a grown man not a little boy anymore. Josh says he's still his dad so he can still care. Does he have room in the fridge for food? Sure. Shayne looks at the teddy bear. Josh can take that back. The teddy has to go. Josh looks at his son.

Coop looks at the mess of the financials at Company. Has Buzz actually looked at these? A month maybe months ago. Like 12 months or more? Coop says he's going to need more coffee to go over this. Beth attempts to talk to the lawyer about the case but he brushes her off. Beth says the case is pretty simple. Beth says that the guy got no head so he refused to pay. Now the landlord wants to evict him. Which he has the right to do. Beth looks at the lawyer. She assumed that the tenant was their client. Coop watches Beth and is ticked. Coop tells Buzz to go over the accounts receivable for him. Beth says she has some stuff to back up her statements. The lawyer admonishes Beth saying that she has to get over working the petty cases and look at cases that actually bring in more money. He's just doing this case because it looks good on his taxes as a deductible. Coop watches. Buzz questions if Coop wants to look at the mortgage next. No Coop wants to look at the meat grinder and deal with the sleazy lawyer. Buzz tells Coop to cool off.

Alan starts his story for Emma at the farmhouse as Olivia and Natalia watch. Alan says that was a bit of history on the family now she can see why the Spauldings command so much respect. Olivia and Natalia roll their eyes. Olivia can't listen to this hogwash so she decides to head upstairs. Natalia will tell her when Alan is done storytelling. Alan tells Emma that the Spauldings always put their family first. If you are born into the Spaulding family, you are very lucky. The Spauldings never forget their own. Natalia can't believe what she is listening too. Alan questions if that is enough. Emma says that it is. Natalia says bravo. That was a great speech. Alan questions what Natalia means. Natalia questions how Alan can says such hogwash to a little girl with a straight face. Alan is shocked. Natalia explains that Emma is young so she'll believe it but where does Alan get off stating that hypocritical hogwash. Hypocritical? That the Spauldings take care of each other. Alan says that he was the one that took Rafe and Natalia in when they came to Springfield. Right when Rafe was the good son that Alan had all his hopes pined on but now that Gus is gone, where is Alan? Alan is nowhere to be found. Olivia comes down and listens to Natalia's tirade. She fights to stop snickering. Alan says he can't help if Rafe is in prison for committing a felony. Natalia says that Alan could at least call or write to his grandson. He could ask Natalia how he is. Instead he does nothing. Rafe is in prison. So, when Emma does something wrong what Alan will disregard her as well? Alan questions if Natalia is done. She is. Alan leaves but warns Natalia what happens when people fall out of his good graces. Olivia walks over to Natalia. How did that feel? Really good. Even if Alan is ticked? Natalia doesn't care.

Coop sits down in front of the pompous lawyer at Company. Is he even aware of how incredible a lawyer Beth is? Beth can add so much to the discussion. She's just a law student with lofty ideals. When she gets into the real world, she will see the truth. The cases that matter are the ones that make money. Coop shakes his head. Beth watches Coop go toe to toe with the lawyer. The lawyer questions if Coop is done. He is. Is he going to sue him? No. Then why is he still there. Beth returns and Coop leaves. The lawyer says he's done. They head off. The lawyer leaves a pittance for the tip. Coop is ticked off.

At the parental workshop, Reva hears another mom whine about the fact that her new kid is going to cost so much money. She so wished she was going to have a son. Reva was about to say something but Jeffrey stops her. Jeffrey tells the ladies that he's just a dad expecting his first kid. Reva is a handful. He gives them that kids take a lot of work but they are miracles. He knows that his child is. Being a parent is worth all the work. Jeffrey says sorry for taking up their time. The women leave. Reva can't help but smirk. Jeffrey suggests leaving. Reva says yes please.

Josh and Shayne continue to unpack stuff at Shayne's place. There is more food in the fridge. Josh should probably go. The bear is back in the box. Shayne says thanks for the help. The place seems more homey now. Josh questions if Shayne wants to talk about anything. Shayne says no. Josh goes outside. Josh pulls out the medal. Just then Dinah shows up. She says that Josh needs to help his kid. Shayne needs to talk to him. Dinah says she has a way that Josh can do that. Josh and Dinah leave together.

In the kitchen at the farmhouse, papers are all over the place. Olivia and Natalia are dealing with the day to day stuff. Natalia says she has to get new medication for Rafe. Olivia say she's already done that. Emma's dance recital? Olivia says that it's next week. Natalia says she can pick up Emma then. Alan has no clue what a real family is. You can't just talk; you have to show it as well. Emma watches Natalia and Olivia interact and smiles. She has the answer for her paper.

At Cross Creek, Reva says that so many things have changed since she was a mom the last time. There are all these classes and course. Jeffrey says he wants to do all of it with her. He wants to study everything. Jeffrey heads outside for a moment. Reva pulls out a camcorder. She tells their son not to worry about Jeffrey. He can handle this dad stuff after all. He'll just do fine being a daddy.

In Shayne's room, he is working off his anger with dumbbells again. He pulls out a picture of a beautiful brown haired woman. The sadness and regret is evident on his face.

Dinah and Josh chat at Towers. Dinah says she likes Shayne. And? Josh questions. Dinah says she wants to help Shayne but she's the wrong person. Josh isn't sure what Dinah means. Shayne is in his wheelchair. Josh knows the physical problems. Dinah says that Josh needs to talk to Shayne because it's more than just his body that is battered and bruised. He needs to talk to a friend. Josh can do that but the trick is he has to do that without Shayne realizing that he's doing it. Does that make sense? Try to say that 5 times fast. Josh smiles at Dinah as she takes a sip of her martini.

In the courtroom, the pompous attorney is brushing off his client. She can't be in court. She has to head to the hospital soon. Beth says that there was a case when the client settled out of court. She could do that. The lawyer pulls Beth aside. What the heck is she doing? Helping the client like they are supposed to be doing in the first place. Beth walks back over to the client.

Alan enters Company and question if Buzz has seen his wife. Wife? Oh, Alan means Beth. Buzz saw her earlier. Coop walks over. He wants to talk to Buzz in private. Buzz says that it's fine with Alan there. Coop tells Buzz that they are in dire straits. The finances are in horrible shape. If Buzz doesn't do something that he could lose Company.

Preview : Buzz questioning how he's about to lose Company. Alan and Coop explain it to Buzz. Beth asking Coop what the problem is. Coop says money problems. Beth telling Lillian that Buzz could lose Company unless Alan can bail him out. Alan questions why he would do that.
