Truth and Fiction
Doris outs Olivia and Natalia to push her own agenda. Blake still thinks she’s the lady of Coop’s heart as he reads his book. Mallet tells Marina the truth. Alan lets Beth know he knows the truth.
Previously - Coop telling Blake not to publish the book. Blake talking to the publisher an giving the book a green light. Mallet and Marina at the adoption agency. Mallet having a hard time with the paperwork. Marina questions what is wrong. Mallet has to tell Marina the truth.
At the farmhouse, Natalia is looking at the computer. Olivia is on the phone. There is a field trip coming up with the kids. The teacher wants Natalia and Olivia to be chaperones. Olivia tells the teacher that she would love to but she never got an email about it. They would have to reschedule their day to go. Natalia says she found the email. Olivia says that they would love to go. It will be fun. Natalia is worried about other people’s reactions to them. It will be exciting going on a field trip together. Where are they going? A landfill. Olivia tells Natalia to remember to bring really high boots.
Marina is confused about the briefcase. It is a gun. Why would the agency worry that they have a gun in the house? Mallet says that is not all of it. Marina says it’s no big deal. If Mallet wants to chicken out of adopting a baby just tell her. Mallet says that is not it at all. He wants to be a dad. What is it then? Why did he not bother to fill out the paperwork. Is the gun the reason? Mallet says yes. There is a gap in his employment work because of some work he did in his past that he’s not proud of. He hasn’t told her about it. It was after he broke up with Harley. Mallet was not in a good place and was working undercover work. He was in a really bad place. Mallet’s work was not exactly kosher and by the books. Marina says they both have made mistakes. Frank ran a chop shop when he was younger now he’s the chief of police. Whatever Mallet did they can’t touch him because the statue of limitations is over with. Mallet says it isn’t for this crime. Marina says that there is only one crime that qualifies for. Mallet says that is what he is talking about. Marina is stunned and leaves the house.
Coop is sitting on the boarding house steps when he tries to call Beth. Can they talk for a bit? She only has a second then she has to talk to Alan. What does he want to talk about? Beth has no clue but she knows what she wants to talk about. It’s time to end things between her and Alan. It’s best for everyone around. Coop agrees with that. It’s the best for him. Alan is wearing dapper suspenders when he is waiting to talk to Beth. He tosses some papers in frustration and anger.
“ Only love can save the world, only love...”
Marina runs outside with Mallet following her. Mallet tells Marina to wait. She just needs some fresh air. Mallet is so sorry that he never told Marina before. He was ashamed of his past work. He still is. He tries to not think about that part of her past. Marina must do that with some of her past as well like when she was involved with a married man. Marina is ticked. Mallet says he’s sorry for bringing up Danny. It was stupid. Marina says of course since Danny was a criminal. Mallet was as well. Of course the agency is not going to give a baby to a criminal. Mallet needs to tell Marina all of the story because it actually gets worse. The man he was working for was Marshall Griggs. The same man that kidnapped Marina for Alexandra? Mallet is sorry he never told Marina about this. He didn’t think that she had a right to know he worked for the man who kidnapped her. Mallet says he was a different man back then. He had no hope. It’s why he kept on coming up with excuses when he saw the paperwork from the agency. He knew the news would crush Marina.
Alan is downstairs in the living room when the phone rings. Alan doesn’t have time for nonsense. When has Doris ever done something like that to him? What does she want? The governor is putting together a taskforce to deal with problems with kids. It has a lot of clout and well Doris wants the job. She assumed she could finagle the post after the Bill Lewis trial but that fell through. Alan says that the victim in that case was his granddaughter Lizzie. It’s taken a lot to get Lizzie’s life back on track. Now Alan has to worry about his other granddaughter Emma. Emma wrote a paper for school on her parents. Now the teacher thinks that Emma is living with a pair of lesbians. Doris is intrigued. Can Alan just give her a donation? That would work. Alan closes his phone. Doris calls her assistant. She wants the superintendent of schools on the phone pronto. Doris has an idea.
Olivia rearranged her schedule so they could go out with the kids. Natalia wants to go but she doesn’t want there to be a misunderstanding about them being there together. It would be awkward and strange. Does Natalia really feel like that? Natalia says she’s making too much of it just like before Alan showed up the other day. It’s nothing. Olivia says they are going to have fun today with Emma. Olivia and Natalia leave for the field trip.
Buzz and Frank are chatting in Company when Coop enters. Frank needs to be congratulated. He’s about to go on a second date with Natalia. That is great news. Coop says he has great news as well. Beth is breaking it off with Alan as they speak. They can finally be together. Buzz groans. Coop says it will be fine. They have a plan in place. Alan has no clue that they are a couple. Nothing bad is going to happen. Just then Blake enters. She says that the Cooper guys have get cleaned up for the book signing party at Towers. What book? Coop’s new book about an older woman and a young writer. Blake still assumes she the lady in question. Coop pulls Blake aside. Buzz groans worrying about the complications. Coop says there is no way in heck that book can be published. He told Blake that. Blake says sorry the book has already been sent to the publisher. It’s a hot commodity. Coop could get a great advance from this. What if people ask about the woman in question? Blake says that he can tell them that he’s a writer and it’s fiction. If he’s really uncomfortable about that, she’s fine with him telling the truth. Coop realizes Blake still assumes she’s the lady in question. Blake leaves. Frank walks over. He hopes his little brother was smart enough to change the names. Coop was. If anyone asks who the lady in question is, just tell them it’s Blake. Beth cannot be hurt by this. Coop better call Beth and give her a heads up then before the book appears everywhere.
Beth arrives downstairs and sees Alan. Alan was about to send people to look for her. Beth’s phone rings with a text. Alan says he doesn’t want any distractions right now. Can she do that? Beth agrees. Alan says he wants to talk to her. He suggests that they go out and have dinner together first to talk. He can tell Jeremy to bring the car around. Beth agrees.
Outside where it’s really snowing, Mallet knows that Marina is hurt by his news that he worked for Griggs. For a long time it was just small stuff like blackmail and scaring people away. It seems so surreal now that he did that. Now Mallet is not bothered by that part because these people were crooks as well. They were guilty of a lot of stuff. Mallet was not really in a good place. He was drinking and gambling heavily. He started to see the people he shook down as just things. They just became jobs. One day then Griggs came and asked Mallet to do a bigger job. He needed Mallet to kill a man named Horace. Horace was not a good guy. He did a lot of bad thing so … Mallet did the job and killed him. What was worse was that Horace was not a complete low life, he was a dad. He had a kid named Darren that Mallet knew. Darren is a good kid. He was a really good kid. Mallet says with heavy emotion in his voice. He walked away from the killing and threw up for an hour. He told Griggs he was done afterwards. He couldn’t do that work anymore. Marina asks how Griggs ended up in Springfield the year before. Griggs came after Mallet saying that Mallet had to do one more job. He owed Griggs that much. He tried everything to get Mallet to do it. He threatened both Dinah and Vanessa but Mallet refused. Marina is in tears. She can’t listen to anymore. Mallet pleads with Marina saying he’s not that man anymore. Marina can’t do this. She needs to leave. Mallet is left alone in the snow.
Olivia and Natalia are eating huge sundaes at Company. The kids are inside eating the same thing. Olivia says there is only so much you can tell a kid about recycling before it becomes boring. They are doing much better with double scoops of chocolate ice cream. Natalia says it’s weird chaperoning together. She’s not sure what to make of it. Olivia says that is honest. Natalia says she has to stop worrying about what others think. It’s not like they are together as a couple right. They know that. It’s not a big deal. Just a couple of people know.
Doris sits at her desk. The assistant asks if she is really sure if she wants to do this. Doris says it’s not personal. She has plenty of gay friends. She really wants to get on that taskforce. She’s tried other things to get the governor’s attention. This story about Olivia and Natalia will change everything.
Coop and Blake arrive at Towers for the book signing. Coop just wants to leave but Blake will not let him. This is going to be a huge advance for him. It could be double what he got last time. Frank asks Buzz how Lillian is. She’s fine. She seemed to believe Buzz’s story that Alan has no clue about Beth and Coop yet. Blake calls everyone’s attention up front. Everyone claps as she introduces Henry Cooper Bradshaw. This is an incredible new book about a young writer and an older woman. It’s entitled Affair of The Heart. Blake wants Coop to read a passage from the book for everyone. She has it already marked. Coop begins to read as Beth and Alan show up. Beth tried to stop the affair. They would meet at times and places but never fall asleep together. If they did that then it would be real. It would mean something. It was in that moment he realized why he was so happy when she finally did sleep with him. He knew that their lives were finally going to change for the better. She was there asleep in his bed for the first time. He knew that their love story had just begun. Beth is embarrassed as she listens to Coop reading. Alan looks over at his cheating fiancée.
Coop continues to read his love story. He wants to wake her and kiss her but if he couldn’t. He knew that he finally had a future with her. He knew that she felt safe and loved while they were together. It was something she did not have elsewhere. They had to be cautious though because she was a mother of three. They couldn’t tell everyone but he couldn’t hid what he felt for her either. Alan is ticked off. Beth is scared. Blake is beyond touched. Everyone claps at the reading. Buzz looks over at Frank. If they did not know about the affair it would just be another book right. They just need to stick to the plan and say that Blake is the lady in question. Just smile and clap. Beth walks over to the side of the room. Coop says he’s done now. Blake says she has another surprise for Coop. It’s a picture of the cover from his latest book. Beth cowers trying to hide mortified by the picture. Alan is pissed off.
Mallet arrives at the agency dejected. He’s shocked when he finds Marina sitting there. They are both there to see the counsellor. The adoption counsellor tells them to go with her. Marina heads in. Mallet is not sure what to say.
Mallet and Marina sit down. Mallet is sorry for not getting back to the counsellor sooner about the papers. He’s having some troubles with some of the forms. Marina says she needs to speak. They came her to get a baby. They would both be great parents. The problem with the whole process is the paperwork makes the agency decide if someone is worthy to have a baby. There are so many detailed forms. You can not remember everything that happened in your past. Mallet did some stuff along time ago that was not traditional work that can not be filled in the paperwork. Mallet looks at Marina. Marina says she’s not sure if that will qualify them or not to have a baby. She says that they are both cops. As such they go to work and risk their lives protecting others. How can an agency say they are not worthy when doing that type of work?
Olivia and Natalia return home. Emma is working on her paper upstairs. Olivia just wants to grab a glass of wine. Natalia will do the same thing. Olivia leaves the room for a second. Natalia hears the start of Doris’ press conference and tells Olivia she better get back in the room. Doris mentions about a little girl doing a presentation for her school about her family. The little girl’s family is not traditional which is clear by the title “ My Two Mommies “. Doris assumes that other parents are assuming the same thing she was when she heard the title. Doris says this is a serious problem that needs to be addressed. Olivia looks at Natalia.
Frank and Buzz are both watching Alan who is ticked. He hasn’t figured it out yet which is good. Blake is all giddy about the book. Beth walks over and questions if they think Alan is an idiot. Frank tells Beth he told Coop to call her before she came. Alan wanted to talk to her. Beth hopes Alan didn’t hear the story. Frank says if he did then just say the story is about Blake. She’s fine with it. Blake walks over to Alan and asks who he thinks the lady in question is. Alan is miffed and leaves. Blake says the hint was three kids. It’s her. He knows that right.
Coop meets Beth over by the elevator. How did it go? She hasn’t told him yet. They were going to do it now at Towers when they walked in on his party. Coop told Blake not to publish the story. Blake set it all up. Beth shakes her head. Blake thinks she is the lady in question. Blake walks over and interrupts and says the party is not about the fans but the press instead. Everyone is talking about the book. Beth knows. Blake loves it. Alan shows up spooking Beth. She didn’t see him there. He had no clue they would be walking into a private party. Alan suggests they continue their talk at home. Beth agrees. Beth and Alan enter the elevator to head home.
Doris continues her press conference. She’s not there to pass judgement just because the family has an alternative family lifestyle. She’s just worried about the kids being exposed to people’s judgements. She really questions the personal agenda of a teacher asking a child to write such a paper. Of course the child is going to do what she is told but what happens when the families life is no longer private but open to the ridicule of others. This is not the time for a teacher to push her propaganda. Schools are supposed to be safe for children. To subject children to a teacher’s agenda when we should protect them is not right. Doris is there to protect the children. Doris looks forward to comments about the story. Olivia and Natalia are wigged out by the statements.
Mallet and Marina arrive home. Would Marina like Mallet to make her dinner? He can’t cook. He wants to do something nice for her. She didn’t have to say that at the agency. Why did she do that? Marina admits what he told her had her head spinning. What does she deal with first. The fact that Mallet killed someone or that he kept the secret from her. A secret that could keep them from having a baby. Mallet is so sorry. Marina says what got her was he told her the truth. He didn’t have to. He could have just lied and made up a story. She’s not mad at him. She says this could mean big problems for the adoption. Mallet knows. The thing is he told her the truth. It means that he has that much faith in them to tell her and let the cards fall where they may. He believed that they could survive even after such an explosive secret. It’s why she had to stand up for them to the agency. Mallet went to the agency to withdraw his paperwork. He didn’t expect to see her there. It was a very nice speech. Mallet and Marina grasp hands. They hope this doesn’t screw up their chances.
Frank says that Coop has it going on right now. A great book and tons of groupies. Frank needs that good luck charm with him more often. Buzz says that this is deceiving. What eventually happens to a winning streak. It has to end. It usually does when a person thinks that they are on top of the world and nothing can touch them.
Beth says it was cold outside. She just wants to get a brandy before talking to Alan. Alan grasps Beth’s hand hard. Alan knows. He knows everything. Beth is terrified.
